Built around your workflow

What a session looks like with StoryRetriever

  1. Pick a story or build one

Choose a template (the dentist, a school transition, a haircut, a sibling's birthday) or start from scratch. Open the editor and add the photos and words that match this child's situation.

  2. Personalize with the child involved

Use the child's actual photos and the child's name. The child sees their own face, the actual waiting room, the actual person they are about to meet. Some SLPs do this together with the child during the last few minutes of session.

  3. Share to the family in one tap

The family has the story on their phone before they leave the parking lot. They can read it that night, on the way to the appointment, or both. If the story needs an update, you edit it once and the family sees the new version.

Common questions from professionals

Do families need to create an account?
Families can view stories via a shared link without an account. If they want to add their own photos or use the app independently, they create a free account.
Can I use StoryRetriever in a school district setting?
Yes. StoryRetriever is designed with COPPA requirements in mind and is appropriate for school-based SLPs. If your district needs a data privacy agreement, reach out and we'll provide one.
What happens if a family doesn't have an iPad?
StoryRetriever works in any modern browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox. Families can use it on a laptop, Android tablet, or desktop computer.
Can I import stories I've already created?
Currently, stories are built in StoryRetriever directly. Our template library covers the most common social narratives, and most SLPs find they can recreate existing stories quickly.
Does StoryRetriever count as billable therapy time?
StoryRetriever is a tool, not a billable service. The time you spend building stories falls under your usual session and prep activities. Many SLPs build stories during the last few minutes of a session with the child involved, which itself becomes part of the session.
Can I use this with clients who use AAC devices?
Yes. Visual social narratives work alongside AAC. The story prepares the child for a situation, and the child uses their AAC system to communicate during it. Some SLPs use a communication board (free with every account) to give the child a way to respond to the story.
What does the data show about visual social narrative effectiveness?
Multiple reviews since 2010 have found medium-to-large effect sizes for behavior change, with the strongest effects when stories are personalized to the child's specific environment. See our research page for citations.
